Winter Airfare Wars: Ryanair releases one million seats for sale at €15
Over 400 routes included
Ryanair has fired the second salvo of its winter fare offensive, offering one million seats for sale on over 400 routes.
The €15 seats are available to book on the airline's website (ryanair.com) until midnight on Thursday, November 5.
The sale travel period is from November to March 2016.
It comes less than a week after Ryanair released 500,000 seats for sale from €9.99 to mark the launch of its updated website.
That sale coincided with a series of technical issues (or "minor teething problems", as a spokesperson described them) that saw Ryanair apologise as many customers were left frustrated by unsuccessful attempts to book online.
This summer, Chief Executive Michael O'Leary predicted the "mother and father" of airfare wars following IAG's €1.36 billion acquisition of Aer Lingus.
Other European airlines, taking advantage of low fuel prices and increased demand spurred by improving economies, are expected to follow suit.
Aer Lingus is currently offering 25pc off selected European fares from Dublin, for example - a sale that also expires on midnight Thursday, November 5.
"We have enjoyed a bumper summer due to a very rare confluence of favourable events including stronger sterling, adverse weather in northern Europe, reasonably flat industry capacity and further savings on our unhedged fuel," O'Leary said this week.
Ryanair has just announced half-year profits up 37pc on 2014, to €1,088 million. Traffic grew 13pc to 58 million passengers in the same period.
This winter the airline will open four new bases (Berlin, Corfu, Gothenburg and Milan) and 119 new routes, including its new Dublin – Amsterdam service.
It will also take delivery of 28 new Boeing 737 aircraft fitted with Boeing’s new Sky interiors and slimline seats. A further 330 are on order.
