The "glorious and unspoiled stretch of beach" near Clonakilty, Co. Cork, topped a list dominated by the southwest.

Kerry is the most popular county in the Top 10 (see gallery above) with four beaches, while Sligo, Mayo and Waterford have none.

The full list is as follows:

  1. Inchydoney, Co. Cork
  2. Derrynane, Co. Kerry
  3. Inch Beach, Co. Kerry
  4. Lahinch, Co. Clare
  5. Rossbeigh, Co. Kerry
  6. Banna, Co. Kerry
  7. Maghera, Co. Donegal
  8. Curracloe, Co. Wexford
  9. Renvyle, Co. Galway
  10. Portmarnock, Co. Dublin

Now in their 14th year, TripAdvisor says its Travellers' Choice Awards are based on millions of user reviews collected over 12 months.

Its list of the World's Top 10 beaches was topped by Grace Bay in the Caribbean's Turks and Caicos, with just one European beach making the grade - Playa de Ses Illetes in Formentera, the smallest of Spain's Balearic Islands.

The second best rated beach in Europe is Elafonissi in Crete.

TripAdvisor also named its Top 10 Irish hotels recently, a list topped by Harvey's Point in Donegal for the fourth year in a row.
