AN Aer Lingus flight had to be diverted this afternoon following a bomb scare.

Aer Lingus flight EI510 was on route from Dublin to Perpignan in France.

The airport there was closed this afternoon from about 2.30pm after a suspicious piece of luggage was found at the terminal.

The suspect luggage forced the evacuation of the airport and led to flights being diverted for several hours.

Due to the closure, the Aer Lingus flight already on route was forced to divert to Toulouse.

Authorities at the airport carried out a controlled explosion of the suspect luggage and normal operations resumed.

The Aer Lingus flight landed safety just after 6pm.
