Avlon House in Co. Carlow topped the 'best value' category for accommodation in Ireland in the annual trivago Awards.

The hotel search site's awards are based on rating and "semantic analysis" of over 175 million aggregated global reviews, it says.

trivago's 10 Best Value accommodations in Ireland:

  2. TurfnSurf Lodge, Bundoran
  3. Áras Ghleann Cholm Cille, Glencolmcille

“We're very happy because this has come from customers," said Tom Donagher, owner of the five-bed B&B. "We feel it's genuine and not a panel of people deciding."

"All we try to do is give visitors to our home a comfortable stay in a warm environment with clean, well-equipped en-suite room and a hearty breakfast," he added.

Set a short walk from Carlow town centre, the B&B also boasts four stars from Fáilte Ireland and glowing TripAdvisor reviews.

Rates on Avlon House's website (carlowbedandbreakfast.com) range from €25.07pp to €39.50pp, depending on when and for how many nights guests stay.

During winter, one night's B&B starts from €30.

Rates include a full Irish breakfast cooked to order, or alternatives such as eggs benedict, cod with hollandaise sauce or porridge with a splash of brandy.

Contacted by Independent.ie Travel, trivago said it couldn't offer any further information on its algorithm or "semantic analysis" due to commercial sensitvities.

"The semantic analysis is used to evaluate more specific criteria, such as best value, breakfast, service and guest rooms," said Johannes Thomas, trivago's MD.

"The analysis is run on over 175 million aggregated global reviews, in order to identify which hotels impress the travellers most on these aspects."

Only properties with sufficient availability and at least 20 reviews are considered.

Other trivago awards saw The Merrion win best five-star hotel, while Harvey's Point in Donegal won best four-star and Killarney's Killeen House took best three-star.

Killeen House also took the award for best guest service, while Dublin's Ariel House bagged the top gong for best accommodation breakfast in Ireland.

The Tides B&B in Ballybunion, Co. Kerry topped the B&B charts.
