Suite talk: Gran hotel La Florida, Barcelona

Gemma O'Doherty

"Always looking outwards, northwards, over the frontier, to where the new things come from," the travel writer Jan Morris once wrote of Barcelona.

You could say the same of its fabulously located five-star, Gran Hotel la Florida, which is perched on Mount Tibidabo, the highest hill in the wooded range that forms the backdrop to the Catalan capital.

Book a two-night stay before March 12 and they'll give you a third night free. Travel must take place in 2010. The hotel is a 20-minute drive into town, and if you can drag yourself away from the terrace pool, a free shuttle takes guests to the city centre. Rooms have marble bathrooms and crisp linens. Most have super views.

The main reason most Barcelonins venture up here is for fun. Tibidabo is also home to the city's Parc d'Atraccions, its oldest amusement park, which opens during August. Double rooms cost from €175 per night (or €117 if you avail of the three-for-two deal).
