What is it: Fishing village.
Where is it: Liguria, north-west Italy.
First became popular with the jet-set: Although mentioned by Roman author Pliny the Elder two millennia ago, it wasn't until the 19th century that Portofino started attracting the well-heeled in any great number. British and Northern European aristocrats came for the scenery, the water, the heritage and the food. They've stayed ever since.
Famous visitors: Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones, Elle MacPherson (left), Ronan Keating, Coleen McLoughlin and Wayne Rooney, Cate Blanchett.
High point: The Rooney/McLoughlin wedding was probably the apex in terms of media interest. Although being twinned with Kinsale surely comes a close second as a memorable moment.
Low point: Possibly about to arrive should Berlusconi's plans go ahead.
Did you know: Princess Diana and Dodi al Fayed visited Portofino just six days before they died in that car-smash in Paris, travelling there by yacht from Monaco .
What to say: "Of course, Wayne, you know that the name comes from the Latin 'Portus Delphini', translated as Port of the Dolphin, because of the many dolphins inhabiting the sea here."
What not to say: "I never liked this place anyway -- good riddance."
