Way to go - River Shannon

TRAVEL: Rail (irishrail.ie): Castleconnell or Birdhill (both 5 miles). Bus (bus eireann.ie): 323, 345. Road: On R463 Limerick-Killaloe; off N7 Limerick-Nenagh.

WALK DIRECTIONS: From bridge at O'Briensbridge follow Shannon towpath (blue arrows/BA) downstream on right bank. In 1½ miles, bear right along Errina Canal towpath. In 1 mile, go under Errina Bridge; climb up to road; left (BA) along road; through gate (BA); right along right bank of the Headrace for 2¾ miles to Parteen Weir. Descend slope with handrail on right; follow Parteen Weir Loop (green arrows) downstream beside Shannon to O'Briensbridge.

LENGTH: 7½ miles -- allow three hours.

GRADE: Easy.

DON'T MISS: Views of O'Briensbridge from Shannon towpath; tow-rope grooves on Errina Bridge; Parteen Weir; views over Lough Derg.
