Rossmore Lakes - way to go

MAP: OS of Ireland 1:50,000 Discovery 28; downloadable map/instructions at discoverireland.ie/walking and coillteoutdoors.ie.

TRAVEL: From Monaghan town, N54 Clones road; in 1 mile, left on R189 ('Newbliss'); in ¾ mile, Rossmore Forest Park entrance on left; follow road to car park.

WALK DIRECTIONS: From car park, follow brown 'Lakes Walk' sign across footbridge. Right, then left (white arrows/WA) up path beside toilets. Bear right around Castle Lake to T-junction. Left (WA) for 300m to pass pointed wooden post. Keep forward for 100m to cross track and reach Castle site.

Return to pointed post; bear left and follow WA around Lakes Loop. Approaching Barnhill Lake, bear right (WA) at a 'Cootehill Road' sign; follow path for 200m; left (black post) for 50m; left (brown 'Court Tomb' fingerpost) on boggy track through trees for 150m to find Court Tomb. Return to 'Cootehill Road' sign; resume Lakes Walk to its end at car park.

LENGTH: Five miles/8km -- allow 2-2½ hours.

GRADE: Easy.

DON'T MISS: Castle site; superb views over the lakes; Court Tomb.

REFRESHMENTS: Picnic.
