Valentines should be a simple affair. One small gift, a small card and a simple declaration of love should suffice. Anymore than that and it becomes cloying, overly sentimental and as expensive as Christmas - but without the good TV.

Here's a few pointers on quick gifts and some quick bargains - Happy Valentines.

Dining out

If you fancy treating your significant other to a meal you may wish to take advantage of the special menu that's been rustled up at Luigi Malones - a three course dinner with a glass of champagne for €35 per person. The menu is available for Valentines weekend.

Available at restaurants across Ireland visit www.luigimalones.com for more information.

Get whisked away

If you fancy being whisked away for all the Valentines trimmings the five star Hayfield Manor Hotel in Cork might be worth a look. Some rooms are still available and the Hayfield are doing an excellent package for €125 pps. This includes a nights stay in a manor suite, a gourmet five course dinner and a relaxing breakfast the next morning.

There's also the courtesy of a late check out and access to the hotels Beautique, pool, outdoor jacuzzi, steam room and gym.

To book call 021 484 5900 or visit hayfieldmanor.ie

In the event your other half doesn't pick up the hint, all is not lost, simply leave your name at thesavvyshopper.ie to win this valentines hotel package for free!

Gifts for Him

Buying for him can be tricky, especially as Christmas might have already filled some of the more obvious present gaps. Grooming gifts are becoming increasingly popular and as long as you don't get him waxed it might be fun for both of you.

The Grooming Rooms in Dublin are currently running 10% off when you order three treatments and he can have everything from a hot-towel shave to an eyebrow tint - there's also the Prescriptive Facial.

To book call 01679 6777 or visit thegroomingrooms.com

Gifts for her

If you need something quickly, perfume works a treat and you won't have to move too far from the X-box to get yourself some.

Cheapsmells.com have reduced all Vivienne Westwood scents by up to 50% . The deal naturally includes my favourite - 'Boudoir Joy' - but be careful before you purchase as it doesn't become a man to make a promise he can't keep.

On a cautionary note ...

Anyone looking to bring their relationship to an abrupt end this Valentines may wish to avail of offers on flowers available at petrol station forecourts. The only person who can justify turning up with flowers smelling of diesel is one employed as a mechanic, and only then under certain circumstances. As well as forecourt flowers other bargains to avoid are teddy bears and free compliments like "It's not how much you spend but who you spend it with" and "Money can't buy love" ....... You have been warned.
