TRAVEL: Rail (irishrail.ie): Carlow (5 miles). Road: N9 to Carlow, R417 to Maganey Bridge. Taxi: A1 Cabs (059 914 2020); Carlow Cab Service (059 914 0000).

WALK DIRECTIONS: From Maganey Bridge, follow the River Barrow towpath south along the east bank to Carlow town.

LENGTH: Five miles -- allow two hours.

GRADE: Easy

CONDITIONS: Towpath underfoot all the way.

DON'T MISS: Maganey lock house; back drain culvert under River Griese -- daring boys would dive through it; lime-burning tower of the old sugar factory.

REFRESHMENTS: Reddy's Bar and Restaurant, Tullow Street, Carlow Town (059 914 2224).
