Great Southern Trail - Way to go

TRAVEL: Bus (buseireann.ie): 72 Newcastle West-Tralee (ask for Barnagh viewpoint). Road: Barnagh viewpoint is on N21 between Newcastle West and Abbeyfeale.

WALK DIRECTIONS: From top end of Viewpoint car park, 'Slí GST (Great Southern Trail)' points left down steps. Follow railway path west to Barnagh Tunnel. Return to Barnagh viewpoint; cross N21 (please take great care!); right along road for 400m.

Go through gate on to railway path ('Newcastle West 8 km') and follow it to Newcastle West.

LENGTH: Six-and-a-half miles -- allow three hours.

GRADE: Easy.

CONDITIONS: Firm, flat path.

DON'T MISS: Barnagh Tunnel; view south and east from Barnagh Viewpoint; view of Garryduff House from Garryduff Viaduct.

REFRESHMENTS: Picnic.
