Greece - need to know

GETTING THERE

  • Go To

Aer Lingus (0818 365 000; aerlingus.com) flies from Dublin to Athens between May and September from €64.99 one way. Our ferry fares came to €155pp, but budget-conscious travellers can avail of night-crossings to save extra time and cash. (ferries.gr)

STAYING THERE

Our find of the trip -- a stake at Kerveli's private beach -- starts from €35pps B&B, villa apartments from €140 (0030 227 302 3006; kerveli.gr)

If it's the whitewashed-windmill-sunset vibe you're after, head for the Poseidon in Mykonos town. From €28pps (0030 228 902 2437; poseidonhotel-mykonos.com)

Santorini's finest views don't come cheap. But if you skimp on the donkey rides, spend a night at the five-star Art Maisons (€155pps; 0030 228 607 1831; artmaisons.gr)

FIVE THINGS TO DO

  • Escape to the 'Mamma Mia!' islands of Skiathos and Skopelos, a two-hour ferry ride from Athens. You'll be "on-location" belting out Super Trouper before you know it. (€37; danae.gr)
  • Chill out at the hip Vouliagmenis beach in Athens. This blue-flag strand, a magnet for water-sports buffs, is just the spot to mingle with the local bold and beautiful. (limnivouliagmenis.gr)
  • Tack on to Turkey for the day. With Samos lying within a donkey's roar of Kusadasi, it's the perfect base to explore some bustling bazaars. (€45 return; meandertravel.com)
  • Take a tour of Santorini's volcano, which keeps the terrain toasty and the spring baths nice and warm. (€20; mysantorini.com)
  • Experience theatre as they did in Ancient Greece. Epidaurus, just outside Athens, has a summer programme, including classics such as 'Medea'. (from €15; greekfestival.gr)
