May bank holiday signals the start of the getting away season, and here are five great deals to get away now.
If you're looking for a sunny getaway over the May bank holiday, you can save a good bit by departing on the weekend itself rather than on the Thursday or Friday. Clickandgo.com currently has a seven-night break in Santa Ponsa, Majorca, with Aer Lingus flights from Dublin or Cork leaving on May 3 or 4 from €390pp half-board.
The same trip departing on the Thursday is an extra €130pp. You'll stay in the Playa Santa Ponsa resort, which has a swimming pool and a beach only 50m away.
Nothing says summer like a Greek island. Whitewashed buildings, bright blue waters and amazing food all make for a tempting break in the sun. Falcon has a week's self-catering near the village of Pefkos in Rhodes from €409pp, departing Dublin on May 28. While it is a popular tourist resort, the area is well worth exploring and is calmer than the rowdy Faliraki. The Pefki Islands Resort is only a few minutes' walk from the beach and the village itself.
3 Dominican Republic
Travelmood has some great add-ons available for worldwide holidays at the moment, including excursions, savings and resort credit. Choose an all-inclusive break at the 5-star Dreams La Romana in the Dominican Republic and you can claim up to $400 worth of credit, probably best used in the spa. There are three pools, one with a swim-up bar, but the private beach is the epitome of Caribbean luxury. Seven nights at the Dreams La Romana starts from €1,399pp all-inclusive, including flights from Dublin in June, though you'll need to book your place before the end of April.
The village of Roda on the northern coast of Corfu is a quiet holiday resort surrounded by beautiful countryside with traditional tavernas along the coast road. When you're not indulging in moussaka and ouzo or relaxing on the beach, you can head out into the unspoilt surroundings for a hike in the mountains or a trip on horseback. Thomson has a week in the Roda Oasis from just €369pp B&B, with flights from Dublin departing on May 23.
5 Waterford snaps
If taking holiday snaps is the highlight of your trips, then a weekend honing your skills could be an enjoyable option. The excellent Travel Department has teamed up with the Dublin Photography School to offer a practical holiday on the Copper Coast in Waterford, complete with tutors to help you get the best out of your gear. Shoots will take place at various times throughout the day, so you'll be able to master tricky dusk and night-time pictures and landscape photography. Trip includes transfers from Dublin on July 18, three nights' half-board accommodation and tuition. Prices start from €349pp.
