Nicola Brady

Nicola Brady shares her selection of four stunning desert hotels in the USA, Chile, Namibia and Dubai.

Where: Utah, USA

Why: There's a particular kind of tranquility that only an endless desert landscape can create. Amangiri (above) stands upon 600 acres within Canyon Point, where rolling, desolate canyons meet rugged peaks of rock. The name says it all - Amangiri means 'Peaceful Mountain'. It's home to suites with incredible views and a swimming pool that's hard to beat, built around the desert rock.

How: Suites start at €1,093 B&B. Fly to Phoenix with Aer Lingus (aerlingus.com) and United via Chicago, before a stunning 4.5-hour drive to Amangiri.

Tierra Atacama

Tierra Atacama

Where: Chile

Why: If you're going to be staying in the heart of the desert, you want to be in a place that blends as peacefully as possible into the surroundings. Tierra Atacama (above) perfectly complements the muted environs, with curved woven chairs by the pool, and driftwood in the bedrooms. At night, when the sky explodes with stars, pitch up by the firepit and breathe it all in.

How: Rates start at €1,229pp for 2 nights, including meals, excursions and transfers. Fly to Santiago with Delta (delta.com) via Atlanta, then on to Calama with LAN (lan.com).

andBeyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge

AndBeyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge

Where: Namibia

Why: With space for only 20 guests, the Sossusvlei Desert Lodge is surrounded by mountains and sand dunes in the ancient Namib Desert. Keep your eyes peeled and you may spot some local residents - Oryx, ostriches or porcupines. Suites come complete with an outdoor shower and romantic skylight above the bed.

How: Nightly rates start at €390pp. Fly to Windhoek indirectly with South African Airways (flysaa.com).

Banyan Tree Al Wadi

Banyan Tree Al Wadi

Where: Dubai

Why: You don't have to travel for hours to discover the desert. The Banyan Tree Al Wadi is just a 45-minute drive from Dubai, but is a stark contrast to the chaotic city. The Beachfront Pool Villas feature a dramatic canopied ceiling, which you can sleep beneath for a night of Bedouin-style 'camping'. You'll have your own plunge pool, too.

How: Nightly rates start at around €482 including breakfast. Fly to Dubai with Emirates (emirates.com).
