Take 5: Luxury lakeside escapes
With stunning panoramas across some of the most beautiful expanses of water in the world, these resorts boast more than a room with a view.
Grand Hotel Tremezzo
Where: Lake Como, Italy
Why: As well as a prime position on Lake Como, the Grand Hotel Tremezzo is an architectural delight. An authentic Art Nouveau palace, the hotel dates back to the early 1900s, with the colour schemes echoing the azalea blooms outside.
The views are really something, and if your room isn't facing the lake, you can always enjoy it from the impressive infinity pool, or the floating pool which projects into the lake itself.
For a real blow out, opt for a rooftop suite, where you can drink in the impressive panoramic views from the hot tub on your private terrace.
How: Room rates start from €290 per room per night with breakfast. The nearest airport is Milan Malpensa, which you can fly to with Aer Lingus (aerlingus.com). You can currently find flights from around €72.99 one way in September.
Hotel Eden Roc
Where: Ascona, Switzerland
Why: With a stunning location on the Swiss shores of Lake Maggiore, the Hotel Eden Roc enjoys some unbeatable views and access to the water. There's a private yachting marina, where guests can charter their own yacht, or complete sailing courses.
Those more comfortable letting others do the work can set sail on a skippered boat trip out to nearby islands.
The hotel also boasts a water-skiing school, and there's a spa with a plethora of saunas, steam rooms and an ice fountain, as well as an indoor/outdoor pool.
How: Room rates start from CHF 350 (€287). The nearest airport is Zurich, with flights from Dublin available with Swiss (swiss.com) or Aer Lingus (aerlingus.com). Fares in September are currently around €192 return with Swiss, or €146 with Aer Lingus.
Hotel Lido Palace
Where: Lake Garda, Italy
Why: The Hotel Lido Palace is the only five-star resort in the Trentino region, and it's certainly a lavish affair. Dating back to 1899, the hotel sits in an enviable location on Lake Garda, with only 42 rooms and suites creating an intimate feel. The elegant façade of the original building has been painstakingly restored, giving the whole resort a uniquely old-world feel.
Though the rooms all overlook the mountains or park, you'll need to upgrade to the Baldo or Apponale Suites for the really stunning views of the water. Located on the top floor of the hotel, they also have private terraces and huge bathtubs, as well as a separate seating area.
How: Topflight offer a week at the Hotel Lido Palace starting at €1,719 including flights from Dublin, Cork or Belfast, transfers and breakfast.
The Europe Hotel & Resort
Where: Lough Lein, Killarney
Why: The impressive views of Lough Lein begin as soon as you enter The Europe Hotel, with the glass atrium providing unlimited views out to the water. Walk through to the garden terrace and you can while away the hours gazing at the lake and mountains, which you can also explore with a boat trip or hike.
The hotel utilises the views throughout the whole resort, with the indoor infinity pool appearing to blend into the lake outside. The ESPA spa is extensive, spread over three storeys with a variety of treatments available, and a darkened relaxation room where you can unwind with a fresh juice from the juice bar.
How: Room rates start from €240 for a golfside room and €290 for a lakeside room, both for two people with breakfast.
The Owner's Cottage at Matakauri Lodge
Where: Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand
Why: While Matakauri Lodge is blessed with an enviable location, with views of the Remarkable, Cecil and Walter Peak mountain ranges at every turn, it's the new Owner's Cottage that really turns heads.
On the shores of Queenstown's Lake Wakatipu, the four-suite cottage boasts the same impressive views of the Remarkable Mountains, but the lake is a constant source of wonder through the huge windows. There's a private hot tub on the balcony, and an outdoor courtyard with BBQ facilities, where you can rustle up an al fresco feast.
How: Prices start from €367 per person per night on a half board basis with pre-dinner drinks and canapes. The nearest airport is technically Queenstown, though the closest international airport would be Christchurch. Fly from Dublin to Christchurch with Etihad (Etihad.com) via Abu Dhabi and Sydney, from around €1,060 in November.
