Splashing out: Perched on the corner of North Bridge, the Balmoral Hotel (0044 131 556 2414; thebalmoralhotel.com) is an Edinburgh institution. Known for its understated elegance and luxurious bedrooms, it was in room 552 that JK Rowling finished her final Harry Potter novel. Doubles from Â¤180.
