Dublin drops out of top 20 cities list
DUBLIN has fallen out of the top 20 top destinations to visit.
The capital is ranked as the No1 place to visit in Ireland but has fallen from 14 to 21 in the Tripadvisor list of top European breaks, as ranked by users of the travel website.
Istanbul in Turkey is the top city to visit, not just in Europe but also worldwide, according to the Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice 2014 awards based on millions of reviews by consumers on its website.
Dublin is also behind Lisbon, Venice, Madrid, Amsterdam Krakow, Vienna, Milan, Athens, Zermatt in Switzerland and Urgup in Turkey.
However, our capital is ranked just ahead of Russian capital Moscow, Dalyan in Turkey, Edinburgh in Scotland and Rimini in Italy.
Killarney, Dingle, Cork, Westport, Donegal town, Galway, Tralee, Navan and Kilkenny follow Dublin in Ireland's top 10 destinations. Failte Ireland spokesman Alex Connolly said that while Tripadvisor was always an interesting source of information this was not the full picture for how Dublin and Ireland were performing.
Official statistics showed visitor numbers to Ireland were up 7pc last year and anecdotal evidence suggested Dublin was doing even better with hotels full to near-capacity, while tourists reported high levels of satisfaction.
Asian cities have leapt in popularity, as Beijing, Hanoi and Shanghai have made it into the top 10 worldwide destinations for the first time, and Siem Reap in Cambodia and Shanghai in China are also there.
Surprisingly, New York has fallen out of the top 10 to number 12, while Paris also fell down the world rankings to number seven.
