A poll of men revealed that getting rid of the beer belly is the biggest pre-holiday worry, with more than half admitting anxiety at the prospect of unleashing their portly midriff.

Those taking part were asked “What things, concerning your holiday, did you worry about before last heading abroad, if any?” – 51 per cent answered “getting rid of beer belly”.

Despite such worries, 53 per cent of those who cited such forebodings said they had done nothing to tackle their runaway waistline before their last trip. One in three said they had tried to do something about it – but failed.

Also at the forefront of a man’s pre-travel fears was something far more stereotypical. Nearly half (48 per cent) said that missing out on a sporting event had been a cause for concern.

Actually having enough spending money for the holiday was of less importance to losing the muffin top and missing the big game – just 43 per cent cited cash flow as a worry.

“Looking good on holiday is not just a concern of women, but I have to say I didn’t expect this to be the top concern of men when it comes to pre-holiday preparation,” said Steph Curtin from the website Bonvoyage.co.uk, which carried out the survey.

Other pre-travel concerns were “getting ahead at work” (cited by 41 per cent of respondents), “weather abroad” (40 per cent), “Leaving pets at home” (36 per cent), “Putting on weight on holiday” (27 per cent), “Getting on with kids/family when abroad” (24 per cent), “Getting passport/visa ready” (18 per cent), and “Keeping kids entertained abroad” (14 per cent).
