The Edge: Delightful Dee and Conor home in on packed House
Looking every inch the Most Stylish Newcomer - as crowned at the VIP magazine Style Awards last May at the Marker Hotel in Dublin - divine Dee Devlin was in House last weekend with her beau Conor McGregor.
The occasion (although Dee and Conor are an occasion in themsevles) was the 40th birthday of Conor's super-coach John Kavanagh.
The birthday boy celebrated in the Wine Room of the chic establishment on Leeson Street with Conor and Dee and, among others, retired MMA fighters Cathal Pendred and Paddy Holohan.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship king and the rest of the VIP guests arrived at 9.30pm and stayed until what is generally considered an admirably late hour.
Also in House last Saturday was Blizzards star Bressie, as was Pretty Little Liars's Sasha Pieterse. (Sasha is here in Dublin for a few weeks with her long-term boyfriend Hudson Sheaffer).
Further into town to 37 on Dawson Street last Sunday night, two of the stars of Dancing with the Stars Katherine Lynch and Thalia Heffernan brought their charismatic presence to the trendy spot popular among the beau monde (look it up.) Okay - the beautiful people.
I can't tell you, sadly, whether Katherine and Thalia were actually dancing in 37 but they did seem to be enjoying themselves.
Celebrated chef Dylan McGrath, top comic Des Bishop, and Dr Eva Orsmond were also in 37 that night, as was the earlier mentioned Pretty Little Liars star Sasha Pieterse. Does nobody stay in any more? If only to watch Dancing with the Stars on the telly...
The Edge: Birthday boys Leo and Matt party for the people
I always said that Leo Varadkar needs to come to the aid of the party. But this is ridiculous.
Not your average Dail bore (he's a fan of Blur and Grace Jones and goes to the Electric Picnic every year faithfully) Leo is both, in this column's esteemed view, a future Taoiseach and a hipster.
Indeed, he proved his hipster credentials last weekend when he threw a birthday party at hipster central, Hacienda, on Little Mary Street.
It would be more worrisome - to take the word he used about Donald Trump's inauguration address - if Leo didn't throw a bash to mark his 38th year.
But what illustrated Leo's hipster credentials more clearly than anything was that the aforementioned birthday soiree last Saturday night, kicking off at 8pm and going on to after 1am, was a joint birthday for him and his partner, Dr Matthew Barrett. They both have birthdays around the same time, so they obviously decided to make it a joint celebration, with gooey gateau to match...
The birthday cake, a big chocolate sweet with layers upon layers of cream, had 'Happy Birthday Leo and Matt' on top of it.
But wait, there was more. Pizzas and chicken wings were served at 11pm. Music was played. There were two pool tables. The place was packed with politicos. Senior counsel and trustee of Fine Gael, Frank Callanan, was there with his stunning speech writer girlfriend, Bridget Hourican; FG legal advisor Jennifer Carroll MacNeill with her husband, Irish rugby guru Hugo MacNeill.
Other guests included comedian Oliver Callan, dance guru Eamon Farrell and artist husband Steve Mannion, politician turned PR Lucinda Creighton, Senator Catherine Noone and her pal, orthodontist Shona Leydon. This was to say nothing of the fact that it appeared that half of the Fine Gael parliamentary party were also present: chief among them, Frances Fitzgerald, Simon Harris, Paschal Donoghue. (The latter was overheard to joke that "Leo was on his turf", given the hipster hooley was held in Dublin 7).
Was Leo taking this opportunity to introduce magnificent Matt to the FG parliamentary party? Either way, my Deep Throats at the soiree were very impressed. "Matt is a lovely fella," one said while another added that Matt, in his dark shirt, looked "strikingly good looking, indeed the whole party was full of strikingly good- looking people".
Furthermore, as one guest was heard to quip, for a party like Fine Gael that was once so deeply and passionately dull and unfashionable, Leo and Matt's joint birthday party certainly showed a "very fashionable and indeed egalitarian new side to the party". And the party.
All Wright on the night for Jill and pals
The Wrights do everything right, don't they? Take last weekend. Jill Wright - ex-model and wife of Mark Wright of the Wrights dynasty - celebrated her 45th year on Friday with a quiet night in Howth where they live. "We managed to get out with my good pals Jo Harpur and Lisa Gallagher and the hubbies for a bite to eat locally," she told your diarist of her birthday celebrations in Crabby Jo's on the West Pier in that most posh principality on Dublin's north coast. "I say managed to get out as it was also my daughter Charlotte's seventh birthday!" Jill added.
The real celebrations, the stunning blonde continued, happened last Friday (two days ago). Jill helped her step-daughter Shona Wright with her first Ladies Lunch in The Seafood Bar in Dawson Street, which is owned by her husband.
All the proceeds went to the very deserving charity, 100 Minds for Temple Street. The beautiful people who attended included, of course Jill and Shona Wright along with all Shona's beautiful besties - Ali Lolola, Jill McGovern and Cheryl Harte.
Suzie Byrne (daughter of Gay and Kathleen), and Melanie Morris (editor-in-chief of Image Magazine) and Jill's VBF Jo Harpur (of Jo Harpur Jewellery) were also there.
Angie Dromgoole spoke on behalf of Temple Street. (Jill told me that Angie "has hands-on experience'' from a parent's point of view of working with Temple Street).
Carmel Breheny, head of marketing from Marks & Spencer Ireland, fashion expert Audrey Taylor and supermodel/Jill's VBF Lizanna Kirwan also pitched up.
The latter, of course, attended Jill and Mark's December 31, 2008 wedding at Michael Smurfit's K Club in Kildare.
Niall and Gillian Quinn taste sweet Pickle
Niall and Gillian Quinn are in a pickle. Sorry - that should read Niall and Gillian Quinn were in Pickle on Camden Street Lower on Tuesday night. (Evidently, it is the manager of Niall's former club Arsenal, Arsene Wenger, who is in a pickle, with the English FA).
On the previous day, Miriam O'Callaghan and her mum were spotted enjoying lunch in the Lemon & Duke on Royal Hibernian Way. The RTE superstar was resplendent in a red coat and knee-high boots. Someone who is always looking resplendent, Blaise O'Donnell, formerly of Gorse Hill in Killiney, seems to spend more time abroad than she does in this country. The week before last, she and her boyfriend Stephen were brunching in the Ritz-Carlton in Abu Dhabi. The happy couple, who flew out to the United Arab Emirates on January 14, were clearly enjoying a much-deserved break in that part of the world.
Your diarist bumped into architect and TV judge on RTE's Home Of The Year Hugh Wallace and his long-term partner Martin Corbett having brekkie in The Greenery in Portobello last Sunday morning.
Hugh spends half the year in Oman for work and the other half in Ireland. And why not?
