Stylewatch: the playground momiform
The school gates might have a reputation as being the place for a parental style-off. But really, it is essentially a car-to-bar situation. Anyone can throw on a nice coat or a pair of high-heeled boots and a slick of mascara and look instantly relatively respectable.
It's the arena of the playground that separates the girls from the women. Looking good while standing around in the freezing cold, or chasing a recalcitrant toddler, or possibly scaling the slide or the rope ladder, is a whole other matter.
Nobody is examining the inside of your car from the school gates. But in the playground, the nappy bag, the buggy - it's all on show. Our favourite look? German Nanny, we call it, a la Leigh Arnold.
Topshop jeans, or dungarees; a cocoon-style coat with large pockets - Cos does this sort of thing well - and Ecco or Camper shoes. No make-up for the very brave, or a barely-there look for others.
