So Over: Overly Polished Grunge
We've noticed an insidious gentrification of the grunge thing of late. Millennials are enthusiastically jumping on the 90s-revival bandwagon, but with slightly sanitised and depressingly polished results.
The flannel shirts look too pressed, the torn jeans too considered, and the hair and make-up too pristine. In the 1990s, people had bad hair in a good way, their make-up was smudged and they were more concerned with debauched parties and rehab to bother with selfies or curating their weekends on Instagram.
We reckon, broadcaster Blathnaid Treacy might be just about getting it right. She played Biddy and Miley's daughter on Glenroe for many years, giving her that child-star thing that was practically mandatory for 90s grunge pin-ups; see Drew Barrymore, River Phoenix et al. Unfortunately, she's probably too old to be emancipated from her parents, and a rehab stint is unlikely. Still she's giving good grunge-revival - at least her roots aren't done!
