Shopping Around: Tins of tomatoes

When it comes to these tins of tomatoes, the ingredients in all are the same; 60% tomatoes in tomato juice with some citric acid as an acidity regulator. The quality of the tomatoes used may well be different, but, try as we might, we couldn't discern a difference in taste. Nutritional values were almost identical too, so these are scored more or less on price.

aldi sweet harvest peeled plum tomatoes, 400g

Price: €0.37 (€0.93 / Kg)

Verdict: These are joint cheapest with Lidl's tomatoes, but these pipped the post quite simply because full nutritional information is provided, unlike on Lidl's tin. There are 18 calories per 100g, which is second highest but sugar content is the exact same as all the others at 2.8g per 100g.

Score: 9 / 10

Other than that they contain 60% tomatoes, like all the others and tasted the same to us.

Score: 8.5 / 10

tesco value chopped tomatoes, 400g

spar chopped tomatoes, 400g

Price: €0.79 (€1.98 / Kg)

Score: 7.5 / 10
