Spaghetti hoops are not exactly known for being an essential part of a balanced diet. However, for many mothers of children who detest nutritious food, a spoonful of these pasta shapes covered in tomato sauce is one of the easiest ways to persuade children to eat otherwise unappetising things, like vegetables.

They were specifically invented for children – spaghetti-O's were a way of making spaghetti less messy so children could eat it without the difficulty of wrapping it around a fork and making the precarious journey from plate to mouth, preserving the appearance of tablecloths and outfits in the process.

While spaghetti hoops probably should remain firmly in the arena of childhood dining, for many adults they are a satisfying alternative to beans on toast.
