Shopping Around: Honey

It's natural and very good for you, although these days I'm told there isn't a huge amount of Irish honey available, so all of these are made from a blend of EU and non-EU honey.

We scored the jars of honey mainly on taste and price and also compared nutritional values. We liked them all to taste but there were differences.

Aldi Kilcree Gold Pure Honey, 454g

Price: €1.99 (€4.38/kg)

Verdict: This was joint cheapest (along with both Lidl's and SuperValu's honey), but tasted quite different to them. Light and sweet, we thought it had a sort of flowery flavour and we liked it. This is packed in Ireland (the only jar that indicated that) and the sugar count is joint second highest at 84g per 100g, although bear in mind that honey is all natural sugar!

Score: 8.5/10

SuperValu Honey, 340g,

Price: €1.49 (€4.38/kg)

Verdict: The same price as Aldi's and Lidl's honey when compared on weight, this tastes different to Aldi's version. The only way we could describe it was as not being as 'light' to taste but is more of the sticky variety, with a deeper, almost treacle-like flavour. Sugar content was 82.5g per 100g, the second lowest of the five.

Score: 8/10

Lidl Kilderg Clear Honey, 454g

Price: €1.99 (€4.38/kg)

Verdict: Joint cheapest, this tasted like the SuperValu option, having a deeper flavour and it wasn't too sweet. We liked it and the sugar was 84g per 100g, which was middling.

Score: 7.5/10

Tesco Clear Honey, 454g

Price: €2.35 (€5.18/kg)

Verdict: This has a good rich, sweet taste, and also has the lowest sugar count of 81g per 100g. It's not too cloying. We liked it but docked points for having a higher price.

Score: 7/10

Marks & Spencer Simply Honey, 340g

Price: €1.99 (€5.85/kg)

Verdict: Part of the new Simply range from M&S, which consist of staples at lower prices, this is another yummy offering, most similar to SuperValu's and Lidl's to taste in our opinion. There is 86.5g of sugar per 100g, and because this was the dearest, it lost some points for that.

Score: 6.5/10
