Shopping around for: Cottage Pie

For all of our gastronomic sophistication, sometimes only good old-fashioned home cooking will do. And if you're not the cooking type, a simulation of good old-fashioned food in the form of the comfort variety will do just as nicely.
Then, you can sip a glass of wine while your preferred ready-made meal heats up in the oven. Preparation time: nil. Our go-to comfort foods tend to be childhood staples such as chicken soup or the deeply comforting cottage pie, which is made up of minced beef, gravy, and topped with a layer of grated mashed potato baked to a crispy finish. Hearty, filling and the food equivalent of a giant hug.
TESCO FINEST ABERDEEN ANGUS COTTAGE PIE
€4.99 per 100g - €1.24
This is from Tesco's fancy Finest range so it's not a fair comparison, but you do pay quite a bit more for this than the other choices here. The meat in this tastes really superior - the marbling in it melts when cooked - and the flavour is very tasty. Per 100g, you get 113 calories, 5.8g of protein, 0.8g of sugar and 5.3g of fat.
WEIGHT WATCHERS CLASSIC COTTAGE PIE 320g
€2.49 per 100g - 77c
I'm not a fan of diet foods and generally the calories you save in opting for a low-fat meal are never quite worth the dark winter of the soul that comes from eating fake butter or sugar- or fat-free foods. Still, if you are counting the calories but still want something comforting, this should make your diet feel a little less sacrificial. Per 100g, you get 87 calories, 2.6g of fat, 1.3g of sugar and 5.6g of protein.
SUPERVALU COTTAGE PIE 450g
€4.88 per 100g
This is from SuperValu's 'Prepared for You' range, which consists of freshly made meals ready to be put in the oven. What's not to love? This tastes home-cooked and is very filling. No nutritional value information available.
