Put to the test: Toilet tissue
Published 04/02/2010 | 05:00
When faced with shelves of toilet paper in the supermarket, what do you go for -- quilted luxury or cheap and cheerful? Well, there really is more to it than meets the eye. The packet you choose may be cheaper, but there may be less sheets and a shorter roll, and if you choose the thick three-ply option you may use less of it, so you might take that into account too. Tested here are three three-ply offerings and two two-ply, including one economy brand. Scores are given on softness and thickness, amount of sheets and length of the roll and price, while taking into account the different types of tissue.
Saxon soft toilet tissue x4, Aldi
Price: €1.79 (45c / roll)
Verdict: These are two-ply tissues and described as 'extra soft, strong and thick'. They were soft, although didn't feel too thick. With 220 sheets per roll, they scored highest on that count. In addition, the length of 27.28 metres was the longest of all those tested, meaning you get more bang for your buck.
Supervalu economy toilet tissue x4
Price: €0.55 (14c / roll)
Verdict: These are described as two-ply but when put beside the other types of tissue here, the paper quality really doesn't compare. So, they're not that nice if you are into soft, thick toilet roll, but if you want cheap, these are a great price. The sheets themselves seem smaller and the number of sheets isn't given on the pack, so you'll probably use more, but the length is 22.3 metres, which compares well with the others.
Floralys quilted luxury soft toilet tissues x6, Lidl
Price: €3.99 (67c / roll)
Verdict: 'Luxury quilted softness' is the description on these three-ply toilet tissues and of the three-plys tested they felt the softest and thickest. They have 176 sheets per roll and rolls are 21.8 metres long -- the exact same measurements as the Tesco three-ply, in fact, but a few cent cheaper per roll.
Tesco luxury quilted toilet tissue x4
Price: €2.79 (70c / roll)
Verdict: A three-ply toilet tissue, these are nice to the touch and were soft and thick. There are 176 sheets per roll and each roll is 21.82 metres long. There is little to choose between these and Lidl's three-ply tissues, apart from a small difference in price.
Superquinn soft luxury embossed bathroom tissue x4
Price: €2.99 (75c/ roll)
Verdict: These didn't feel quite as thick or soft as the three-ply tissues from Tesco and Lidl. However, these have the second highest number of sheets per roll (200) after Aldi and the rolls are also second longest after Aldi's two-ply, with 24.8 metres. These were the dearest, though, but they should last you longer.
