Put to the Test: Peanut butter

Published 11/11/2010 | 05:00

You'll either hate it or love it, but as a spread at least you're getting some protein when you eat peanut butter. The five peanut butters tested below all have similar ingredients: peanuts, oil, sugar and salt, and no evil extras! We scored on taste, nutritional value and price.lidl mcennedy smooth peanut butter, 500g

  • Go To

Score: 4/5

Verdict: This was our outright favourite with a strong roasted peanut taste, a smooth flavour and not too salty. It is also the cheapest (just) of the five and contains the highest quantity of peanuts at 95%. It also has the joint-lowest calories, at 596 per 100g, and the second-lowest fat content, at 50.3g per 100g.

Price: €1.49 (€3.28/Kg)

Tesco crunchy peanut butter, 340g

Score: 3.5/5

Verdict: This one is crunchy rather than smooth, but on taste we liked it. It comes in the middle for price and for peanut content (91%), has the lowest fat content (49.7 per 100g) and the joint-lowest sugar content listed.

Price: €1.39 (€4.09 / Kg)

Large heritage smooth peanut butter, 227g

Score: 3/5

Verdict: The dearest of the lot -- but this one does taste very good and has just the right amount of salt for our palates. It also has the second-highest peanut content, at 93%, the joint-lowest calorie count and second-lowest fat content, although the sugar content, at 6.5g per 100g, was the second highest listed.

Price: €1.42 (€6.25 / Kg)

M&S smooth peanut butter, 340g

Score: 3/5

Verdict: This one was the second dearest but tasted lovely and nutty. Our quibble was that we would have preferred it a little saltier, but then everyone has their own preference on that count. This one contains 90% peanuts and has the lowest sugar content listed at 5.1g per 100g

Price: €1.49 (€4.38 /Kg)

Aldi grandessa smooth peanut butter, 500g

Score: 2.5/5

Verdict: Well priced and, in fairness, just two cent dearer per kg than Lidl's peanut butter. We liked the lovely roasted peanut flavour, but being picky, thought this one was too salty. It contains 90% roasted peanuts and has the highest sugar content of the five at 8.1g per 100g and the highest calorie count at 618 per 100g.

Price: €1.65 (€3.30 / Kg)
