Put to the test: Cotton buds

We all have them in our bathroom and use them for a host of small jobs. I'm talking about the cotton bud.

We tested five different brands. All are 100pc cotton and all can do the job but are there differences?

Superquinn cotton buds x200

Score: 4/5

Verdict: The second dearest but still not bad at 79c for 200 buds. We thought these had the thickest amount of cotton after Johnson's offering and given that they cost a lot less, they had to come out on top.

Price: €0.79

Aldi lacura cotton buds x200

Score: 4/5

Verdict: A great price and joint cheapest with Lidl's version. The cotton didn't unravel too much when wet and pulled, and after Johnson's and Superquinn's buds, these appeared to us to have the most cotton and were soft too.

Price: €0.35

Johnson's cotton buds x200

Score: 3.5/5

Verdict: These were deemed highest in quality, equipped with the thickest cotton of those we tested. However, there's no getting away from the fact that they're the dearest, so if you're watching your money, you could do better.

Price: €1.79 at Tesco

Spar cotton buds x200

Score: 3/5

Verdict: We were pleasantly surprised by Spar's offering; the amount of cotton, while not the biggest or softest, will do the job and the price is good too.

Price: €0.69

lidl iseree cotton buds x200

Score: 2.5/5

Verdict: These are joint lowest in price but we felt they came with the thinnest amount of cotton, which also seemed easiest to pull away from the plastic wand.

Price: €0.35
