Put to the test: Cling film

It's invaluable for covering food and helping to keep it fresh, and we should all have cling film as a staple in our kitchen cupboards.

You might look at the prices when at the supermarket, but what about the length of cling film and its strength?

We looked at these aspects of five own brands. And we also check out the packaging and information provided. All products tested here provide warnings on safe use of the cling film.

ALDI ALIO CLING FILM 75M X 35CM

Score: 4/5

Verdict: At 75 metres in length this cling film will last you a long time. It is, in fact, joint longest with Lidl's cling film and also joint cheapest, working out at around 2 cent per metre. This one has a very neat opening, good stick and while the cling film isn't thick, it is strong.

Price: €1.49 (2c / Mt)

TESCO CLING FILM 15M X 35CM

Score: 4/5

Verdict: This appears to be amazing value but this cling film is shorter than the others at 15 metres, so when length is taken into account it is dearer, although we're only talking around half of one cent per metre. There is lots of information on the packaging, this cling film is a little thicker and appears to be good and strong and the cutting edge is sharp.

Price: €0.39 (2.6c / Mt)

LIDL AROMATA CLING FILM 75M X 35CM

Score: 3/5

Verdict: This cling film, joint longest and cheapest with Aldi's cling film, feels a little thinner than those above but seemed strong enough. The packaging doesn't indicate if it is suitable for use in microwaves. As most other packaging does, we weren't sure if we should assume this is also safe to use in microwaves.

Price: €1.49 (2c/Mt)

CENTRA CLING FILM 30M X 30CM

Score: 3/5

Verdict: The width of this cling film is slightly smaller than most of the others. There is plenty of information on this packaging and it claims that it is "specially made for covering dishes and bowls when microwave cooking". The serrated cutting edge isn't as sharp as some of the others and the film appeared to be a little thin but seemed strong enough. This was the dearest.

Price: €1.57 (5.2c / Mt)

SUPERQUINN EUROSHOPPER CLING FILM 50M X 29CM

Score: 3/5

Verdict: This one is also less wide than the others but is plenty long at 50 metres. The film is thin but seemed strong and this one is second cheapest. Our quibble was that the serrated edge is on the opposite side to all of the others and is under a flap of cardboard so isn't the easiest to access and cut. The information on this one doesn't indicate if it is microwave suitable.

Price: €1.09 (2.18c / Mt)
