How you can save at the pump

•Ditch any unnecessary weight, such as junk in the boot.

•Use air vents instead of windows. Half-open windows add 5%-10% to fuel consumption at 70mph compared to 50mph.

•Cycle or walk short journeys to the shops and so on.

•Keep tyres inflated to correct pressure.

•A cold engine uses more fuel. Drive gently after starting up.

•The optimum speed for fuel consumption is 50mph. At 60mph fuel consumption rises by 17% and by 29% at 70mph.

•Don't floor the accelerator -- gently does it. A less aggressive driving style can cut fuel consumption by 13%.
