1. Decide on a route
Find out where the best shops are, and map out your route, Check the website of the Irish Charity Shops Association for a list of charity shops in your area. www.icsa.ie
2. Schedule a full day
Bigger charity shops colour-block clothing to ensure easy browsing but smaller venues require more rummaging, so give yourself time.
3. Keep a keen eye
Look out for high-quality natural fibres like silk, wool, linen and cashmere in good condition; don't overlook leather gloves, bags and belts. Stylist Annemarie O'Connor says the best bargains can be found in coats, dresses, hats, scarves and bags.
4. Be open-minded
A removable stain or a small rip can be mended at home.
5. Avoid season syndrome
Clothes are normally donated during season clean-outs, so great winter coats can be found in spring/summer. Annemarie O'Connor says tags are often marked with the date the donation was received, so you can keep an eye out for the latest stock.
