'Rory has the best of both worlds'

Rory was two-years-old when he was diagnosed with ASD. His mum, Jennefer Cullinan, hired a home tutor for a year, and then opted for an early intervention pre-school class.
Now seven, Rory has just started second class. He attends an ASD unit at St Mary's National School, Saggart, Co Dublin, but spends a certain amount of each day in a mainstream first class, with assistance from an SNA.
"Last year he started doing half-an-hour a day in mainstream. Before that, he would do 20 minutes twice a week. That's going to be increased this year. He loves it, he really wants to do more time in his 'big class' as he calls it.
"Whether he will be in mainstream full time, I can't say yet, but for now it's the best of both worlds. He doesn't need to be in a special school but he couldn't manage mainstream. It's the perfect in-between for us."
