Me and my bike: Kathryn Thomas
'I like nothing better than picking a lunch spot and cycling there and back'
How did you get into cycling?
I did an Ironman with Siobhan Byrne from BodyByrne Fitness and Rosanna Davison four years ago. We were a team of three and I did the 90k cycle. I trained hard for that. I hadn't really cycled much before then. Now I love it.
What do you get out of it?
I love the fact that it breaks up the running training that I do. Also there is nothing better than picking a destination for lunch in somewhere like Wicklow or Howth and cycling there and back. You definitely feel you've earned it.
What bike do you have? And how much did you spend on it?
I have a Scott bike. Padraig bought it for me for my birthday last year. I think it was about €1,000.
What is your favourite type of gear?
I don't really have a favourite. Anything that is comfortable with zips. Zips are vital on bike rides.
What cycling events have you taken part in?
I have done two Ironman competitions and numerous Triathlons. I do the Triathlon for Respect every year and am looking forward to it again this year.
What are the best foods to take on long rides?
I am a big fan of the Wyldsson range. They are an Irish company and their snack tubes of nuts and seeds are not just tasty, but give the perfect energy boost too.
What is your best advice for beginner cyclists?
Pick routes that are flat to start out. Build up your leg strength before taking to the hills.
