Muhammad surges into top 100 names for boys
Muhammad is the fastest-rising name in the popularity stakes for boys born last year, according to the Central Statistics Office.
The name was the latest entry to the top 100 boy's names in Ireland last year, figures reveal.
It jumped from 119th place in 2015 to 83rd spot last year, reflecting Ireland's increasingly multicultural population.
Meanwhile, traditional names for babies retained the top spot.
James was the moniker of choice for all baby boys born in Ireland in 2016, nudging Jack to second spot for the first time since 2007, while Emily was the top girl's name for the sixth consecutive year.
Willow, Matilda, Harper, Heidi, Zoey and Aria were the only new entrants into the top 100 names for girls in 2016. For boys, Louis, Lucas, Josh, Jason and Ollie had the most growth in popularity along with Muhammad.
Murphy, Kelly, O'Brien, Ryan and Walsh were the five most common surnames of newborns.
