VW to use XLI blueprint on other models
Volkswagen will use its XLI two-seater as a platform for other vehicles across the group.
The XLI goes into production this year and is being heralded as the most economical production car of all time.
It uses a two-cylinder diesel engine and an electric motor to produce as much as 313mpg and emit 21g/km.
On it will be based other frugal engines of the future and new powertrains for plug-in hybrids, including the Golf and Audi A3.
