VIDEO: Criminal’s dramatic 120mph police chase is foiled by police helicopter’s advanced technology
The UK’s West Midland’s Police Force has released dramatic footage of a police chase in which a man’s escape was foiled by a helicopter’s advanced heat technology.
Julian Allen fled arrest, prompting a 120mph police chase in Castle Bromwich, UK, where the accused narrowly avoids colliding with other vehicles, drives the wrong way around round abouts and performs a hand break turn to evade the police.
While police cars abandoned the pursuit, the police helicopter kept a close watch on Allen using heat technology.
The 25 year old soon ditched the car, not knowing that the police were keeping a close eye on him as he fled into a garden and laid low on the top of a garage roof.
The helicopter’s technology allowed officers to communicate Allen’s location to their colleagues on the ground, leading to the criminal’s arrest.
Allen was jailed for 30 months after he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and handling stolen goods in Birmingham.
West Midlands Police Traffic Manager, Chief Inspector Kerry Blakeman, said: “This was a textbook example of the force helicopter and traffic units working together to track and arrest a dangerous offender.
“Our drivers are highly trained to pursue vehicles safely…but if the manner of driving is so extreme that following it could endanger other road users or pedestrians then we may hold back and let the helicopter take over.
“Allen may have thought he’d given us the slip…but he was quickly proved wrong.”
