The M3 generations
THE first M3 was made in 1986. Its 4cyl 2.3-litre engine (195hp) hit 100 kmh in 6.8 seconds.
Its successors were a 2dr coupé (1992), convertible (1994) and 4dr saloon (for the first time). They had a 6cyl 3-litre (286hp); 0-100kmh in under six seconds. The 1997 M3 had the world's first volume car Sequential M Gearbox (SMG).
The third-generation (2000) comprised a coupé or convertible. The 3.2-litre 6-cyl had 343bhp and did 0-100 kmh in 5.2 seconds.
Remember the M3 CSL 'Coupé Sport Lightweight' (2003)? Great car.
The fourth generation came in 2007 with a new 4-litre, 420bhp V8 for the coupé, saloon and convertible (in 2008).
