Saab leads charge to electrify estate driving
SAAB is developing an electric 9-3. It claims it is the first allelectric practical family estate and predict a range of 200kms.
The 9-3 ePower is a prototype that will debut at Paris later this month before being subjected to an extensive test and evaluation process early next year.
This is the first electric vehicle from the Swedish marque, currently enjoying something of a revival of fortunes after a difficult couple of years.
The 184 hp electric motor drives the front wheels through a single-speed transmission (0-100 kmh in 8.5 seconds).
The 35.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is placed where the exhaust system and fuel tank on the standard 9-3 SportWagon would normally be. The car-maker will ask hundreds of drivers and their families to test drive and evaluate the new car in extensive trials in central, western and eastern Sweden during 2011 and 2012.
