Revealed: The safest cars on our roads
THE safest cars on our roads have been revealed.
After undergoing tough new Euro NCAP crash tests, the Volvo XC90 had the best overall five-star performance as well as being top of the large off-roader league.
Euro NCAP says the Swedish vehicle had “an outstanding” 97pc score for adult occupant protection.
And it had a maximum 100pc for its safety assist technologies.
The Mercedes GLC was the best small off-roader tested by Euro NCAP in 2015. The Jaguar XE and the Toyota Avensis ended up with identical scores.
The Infiniti Q30 was the best-performing small car while the Honda Jazz and Suzuki Vitara were the big scorers in their segments. The Jazz won the Best-in-Class accolade because of the company’s policy of fitting advanced safety systems, Euro NCAP said.
Volkswagen’s new Touran, which has just gone on sale in Ireland was judged the highest-scoring small people carrier in the crash tests while the Ford Galaxy/S-MAX came out on top in the large MPV category.
None of the roadsters tested got five stars but the 4-star Mazda MX-5 was best in its category.
This year the tests will be even tougher as Autonomous Emergency Braking systems involving pedestrians will be taken into account in computing the score.
