Hyundai’s Tucson crossover/SUV was the best-selling car in April as registrations across the board rose by 10pc, new figures show.
The Tucson is also the biggest seller so far this year and is followed by the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus, Skoda Octavia and Nissan Qashqai
Registrations for the year to date are up 26pc – to 93,240 - the new SIMI statistics reveal.
And the top selling car brands so far in 2016 are Toyota, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Ford and Nissan
Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) registrations were up 11pc (2,311) on April 2015 (2,078) and are running 29pc (15,730) ahead of the corresponding period last year.
SIMI Director General, Alan Nolan says: "Vehicle registrations are a very accurate barometer for the progress of the economy with the new-car statistics reflecting the position of consumers while business activity and confidence can be seen in the commercial vehicle sales.”
He added: “As we move closer towards the second registration period (from July 1) we would expect to see sales taper off somewhat however there are still very strong offers and many deals still to be done.”
