Rally focuses Ford minds on Fiesta

Ford is finally set to roll out a hot-hatch version of its bestselling Fiesta next year.

The project to deliver an ST-badged model has been on hold for years while the manufacturer considered the costs. But the Fiesta's introduction into WRC competition has made up minds. The Fiesta ST is expected to be powered by a 180bhp version of Ford's 1.6-litre Ecoboost engine, which will likely be mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.

As well as offering a marketable tie-in to the manufacturer's rally campaign, the fast Fiesta will offer Ford customers a similarly priced rival to the Renaultsport Clio 200 and the Volkswagen Polo GTI.

Audi fires up new Quattro coupe

THE Audi Quattro coupe shown in concept form at last September's Paris show is about to be given the green light for limited production.

The S5-based prototype was Audi's tribute to 30 years of quattro models and received a strong reception from visitors to the show.

Now the Quattro looks set to be launched in 2013 using Audi's aluminium spaceframe chassis and the running gear from the RS5.

Power is expected to come from the firm's 2.5-litre turbocharged engine producing 402bhp.

The Quattro will of course have four-wheel-drive, and weight will be kept to a minimum by use of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic panels.
