So if you have more than €750,000 you can put your name down. This has a 500bhp-plus V8 petrol engine which is aided by a pair of 109bhp electric motors and a battery pack.

The 918 Spyder made its debut at last year's Geneva motor show as a sort of public testing. There was serious interest so now they are going to go ahead and build it. Suitably, they will build 918 of the supercars.

The figures are astonishing. It zips from a standing start to 100kmh in 3.2 seconds, has a top speed of 320kmh, and Porsche claims it can do as much as 94mpg and emits a mere 70g/km of CO2 on the New European Drive Cycle.

But there is a catch, apart from the price. It will be made in left-hand drive only. Production begins in September 2013. Each axle is also driven by an electric motor so you effectively get variable four-wheel drive.
