Mercedes has announced prices for its new A-Class which arrives in December.

It says it is giving 'pride of place' to two models -- the A180 petrol at €26,435 (ex-works) and the A180 CDI diesel at €28,550.

Significantly Mercedes concedes the diesel is the one that will be in keenest demand as its emissions dip to just 98g/km.

This is an important car for the marque (aren't they all?) in that it is seen as a way of bringing a new generation of younger buyers into one of its cars.

There will be three-door spec and equipment lines -- Style Pack, Urban Pack and Sports Pack.

More than 40,000 orders have already been placed worldwide even before production has started and Mercedes says it has had to bolster capacity to meet expected demand.

All engines have an idle-stop system as standard; you can have a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
