Motor traders hope for lucky 13
A MIXTURE of superstition over cars with 13 on the registration plate and the motor industry's attempt to spread sales across the year means we will have two reg plates for 2013, and every year afterwards.
New registrations until June 30 will have 131 instead of 13. And then from July 1 it will become 132. Alan Nolan, director general of The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), said: "While it is too early to tell how new car sales are doing, there certainly has been a lot of interest."
New-car sales figures from SIMI for last year show a 12pc fall in registrations to 79,498. December sales were down 15pc.
Mr Nolan added: "The motor industry is often used as a barometer for the economy and we hope, with consumer confidence seeing some slight pick up, combined with the new number plate, that interest will grow in coming weeks."
