Mazda3 due here later in the year
THIS is Mazda's new '3' small-family hatch – unveiled last week to much fanfare from the Japanese maker, though it was skimpy on detail.
As with most new cars this is longer, wider and taller with a 60mm increase in the wheelbase and that means the cabin will be roomier.
They have the steering wheel lower down while the windscreen pillars are further back to give you better visibility.
Boot space goes up to 350 litres which is decent but still 30 litres fewer than the likes of the Seat Leon or Volkswagen Golf.
There will be a lot of hi-tech stuff available as either standard or optional such as a head-up display, a 7in infotainment screen and mobile-internet connectivity. The latter includes "Aha" a cloud-based service with more than 30,000 stations including radio, podcasts, audio books, Facebook and Twitter audio feeds and so on.
Prices and spec have not been revealed. It will be interesting to see how near they stay to the current €20,595 starting price.
There will most likely be a 1.5-litre petrol (99bhp) and diesels will surely include a smaller (1.6-litre) power plant.
Expect it to be shown at the Frankfurt motor show in September.
The previous-generation 3 accounted for a third of Mazda's global sales.
