IT'S not every day you are handed the keys of a brand new Scania truck worth €100,000.
Well, that's what happened to Loughrea, Co Galway man Gabriel Warde, pictured, after he won the Scania Young European Truck Driver competition.
Transport Minister Leo Varadkar officially performed the ceremony recently.
Gabriel won ahead of 17,000 young truck drivers from 24 European countries. They had been tested on eco-driving, securing cargo, rescue and vehicle checks over two days in Sweden.
The competition is part of a global push to improve standards and to attract more young drivers.
It has the backing of the European Commission and the International Road Transport Union. Its sponsors are Michelin and Volkswagen.
Scania also runs similar competitions in Latin America, Africa and Asia.
