Irish Car of the Year contenders put through paces

THE refresher day for the Continental Irish Car of the Year took place on Friday as the 11 shortlisted cars battled for the overall title and winners of five categories from small cars to sports/performance models. Members of the Irish Motoring Writers' Association put all the cars through their paces
There was some surprise that the innovative Volkswagen Up! wasn't there fighting it out in the small-car group with the Ford B-Max and Peugeot 208. However, as there were Skoda and Seat derivatives of the Up! alongside it on the long list that might have worked against it making progress. The Honda Civic also might have felt unlucky not to be there.
The final 11 included three BMWs, with the 3-Series seen as having a chance at the overall title. There should also be good support for the Volvo V40, Mazda CX-5 and the KiaC'eed as well as the small Peugeot and Ford. The latter has sliding rear doors and no pillar between front and rear seats. The result will be announced at the Car of the Year lunch on November 22. In a special packed motoring supplement next week I and contributing editor Geraldine Herbert will give our verdicts and publish how we voted.
