Golf is European Car of Year

Volkswagen's family hatchback, the Golf, was the runaway winner of this year's European Car of the Year accolade.

Now in its seventh generation, its 414 votes left all others trailing way behind.

Second was Toyota's GT86/Subaru's BRZ on 202 votes.

Volvo's V40 was third, ahead of the Ford B-Max, Mercedes A-Class, Renault Clio, Peugeot 208 and Hyundai i30.

Judges said the Golf had won for its "achievements in safety, fuel efficiency, dynamics and comfort". The last Golf to win the award was in 1992.
