Separate showrooms housed the Audi and VW models but the salesman in the VW area would talk to us about either brand.

We were on the lookout for a slightly used VW Golf and found a few on the garage's well-laid- out forecourt. All models -- 63 in total -- were immaculately presented and all carried details.

We were surprised to find a wide selection of fresh imports parked among the Irish-registered used models. We were later to learn that there is a scarcity of 09 models -- hence the importation to meet demand.

Among the three Irish-registered VW Passats we found 10 with 09 registration and one 06 import. All were diesel and the 09 models varied in price, starting at €22,745. Average mileage was 13,000km.

Western Motors also displayed two imported 09 Audi A6 diesels, a VW Sharan and two VW Tourans. Parked beside a lovely Meath-registered 06 Audi A4, they had three imported A4 diesels. Again the mileage was less than 20,000km.

We saw plenty of customer parking but failed to find a disabled space. After earmarking two Irish Golfs we entered the VW showroom.

In the bright display area we saw a man apply "World Car of the Year" signage to a new black Golf. We were no time inside when Liam Gillespie came to our assistance.

We asked for a used-car list and were given a print-out of the VW and Audi list. He marked both Golfs on the list -- both Louth registered. The 09 had the 2.0-litre TDi engine and only 15,000km for €20,445. The 08 had the 1.9 TDi engine, came in beautiful condition with 39,000km on the clock and was priced at €17,445. Mr Gillespie outlined their history and explained that the newer Golf carried a €104 yearly road tax against €156 for the 08.

Before sitting at Mr Gillespie's desk we noted an unmanned reception area; three well maintained toilets, including a disabled unit, an excellent customer waiting area, coffee dock and two TVs. Interestingly, Western Motors provides a specific playroom for children.

Inviting us to have a seat at his desk, Mr Gillespie informed us that for cash he would take €19,200 for the 09 and €16,400 for the 08 Golfs. We asked for time to think and upon leaving we were handed his business card.

On its price list, Western Motors makes a point of highlighting its 'peace-of-mind guarantee'. Before being sold all cars are serviced, valeted, clear of outstanding finance and the mileage is verified.
