Garage Watch: It's even better the second time around
Murphy Chambers Cars Ltd, Nissan Dealer, Dundrum Road, Dundrum, Dublin 14
WE called to Murphy Chambers at around 5.30pm on a Friday and it was closed.
Going back the next morning we found a forecourt with 14 used models that, apart from Nissan, included BMW, Volvo, VW, Saab, Opel and Toyota.
All the cars outside were priced and carried details on the side windows. This sort of information is really helpful and saves having to ask too many questions. We picked out a really fresh 2006 1.2-litre Nissan Micra. It had only 17,000km on the clock and had one previous owner.
The colour was described as Cafe Latte – this really was a specimen car, apart from a few scratch marks on the wheel trims.
Beside our Micra, a prospective customer was finding it difficult getting his golf clubs into the boot of a Nissan Note.
Around such important matters do lives revolve. We kept our own counsel and went quietly inside. There we spotted, of all things, two cream Harley Davidson motorcycles with saddle bags attached. They had that collector look about them and, along with a beautiful 1953 MG TD, took pride of place in the showroom.
We were met by a young salesman who introduced himself as Alan Chambers. He invited us to have a tea or coffee. We declined, so he went off to get the keys of the Micra. We noted a customer waiting area, hot drinks, water dispenser, four seats, table and reading material.
We counted seven new Nissans on display; all were priced and there was plenty of brochures. With the Micra priced at €7,950 we asked, on Alan’s return, for his best price.
He told us he just helped out on a Saturday. He introduced us to the sales manager, Gerard O’Brien, who said they would be prepared to give us €1,000 off and suggested that if it did not suit us to test drive the car right away we could contact either of them and drive the Micra at a time of our choosing.
We thanked them, chatted a bit and then left. It was nearly two months since that initial visit and we just happened (!) to stop again at the garage.
We found the Micra was now priced at €6,950. The number of used cars on display came to 24 – again with a wide mix of vehicles.
There were three new Nissans in the showroom and an 07 Saab, 05 BMW 3 Series and 06 Mercedes E Class automatic. You would be surprised at what you can see and learn on a second visit. Our second look reinforced our initial impression that this is one professional outfit.

Excellent level of information on the cars. Really helpful staff. Lovely site.
Although there is space, not finding specific customer parking and detailed signage.
A dealership with a real professional feel to it. We’d come back (again!).
